In 2009, he founded Hamlar Enterprises, a business brokerage firm facilitating mergers, acquisitions, and valuations across Southwest Virginia. In 2012, he and his wife, Katina Casey Hamlar, expanded into real estate with the creation of Hamlar Properties, overseeing property management and real estate transactions, along with development initiatives including Franklin Road Junction.

Michael Hamlar is a respected entrepreneur, business leader, and community advocate based in Roanoke, Virginia. As President and Owner of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory, serving both Roanoke and Rocky Mount, he continues a distinguished family legacy rooted in service, professionalism, and community leadership.
With a diverse portfolio spanning funeral services, real estate development, media, and business brokerage, Hamlar has established himself as a forward-thinking leader. In 2009, he founded Hamlar Enterprises, a business brokerage firm that has facilitated over $1 million in transactions across Southwest Virginia. He later co-founded Hamlar Properties in 2012, expanding into real estate development and management, including projects such as Franklin Road Junction. His continued growth includes the expansion of Hamlar-Curtis to Rocky Mount, the addition of a crematory in Roanoke, the launch of the Lawrence Hamlar Event Center in 2023, and the opening of Hamlar Pet Funeral Home & Crematory in 2024.
Hamlar is also the creator and host of “The New Virginia Economy with Mike Hamlar,” a television segment highlighting regional business innovation and economic development. His thought leadership and business acumen earned him recognition as one of The Blue Ridge Journal’s “Top 20 Leaders Under 40.”
A committed public servant, Hamlar has held numerous leadership roles at the local and state levels. He is a Past President and Chairman of the Board of the Virginia Morticians Association, Inc., and served on the Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors, where he contributed to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. His public service includes selection to Governor Ralph Northam’s Transition Team, participation on the Secure Commonwealth Panel focused on homeland security, and service as Co-Chair of Virginia’s African-Americans for Biden/Harris.
His extensive board and civic involvement includes Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge, Family Service of Roanoke, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and the Legislative Advocacy Committee of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce. He has also played a key role in supporting education through his work with Noah Christian Academy and as an adjunct professor at American National University in Salem, Virginia.
Dedicated to philanthropy and legacy-building, Hamlar founded the Hamlar Family Foundation and established endowments at Wake Forest University, Virginia State University, and Norfolk State University. His commitment to youth development is further reflected through his involvement with the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, where he helped establish Builder’s Clubs in local middle schools.
Hamlar earned his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, where he was a Seattle Bowl champion with the Demon Deacons football team. He also holds an associate degree in mortuary science from John Tyler Community College and an MBA from Liberty University. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration at Walden University.
A man of faith and service, Hamlar is a trustee and youth leader at Bethlehem Baptist Church and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He is married to Katina Casey Hamlar, and together they have three children.
